The Anagran FR-1000 Flow Router
The Anagran FR-1000 Intelligent Flow Router can solve network congestion problems and improve the broadband QoS.
SINCE the launching of the Arpanet in 1969, the Internet has undegone amazing growth to where it now serves an indispensable element in the daily lives of millions of people everyday.

In its early 40 years of life, the internet hasa progressed from a nationwide set of packet switches and low-speed circuits to a global information-rich resource delivering a diverse array of rich media information in the form of video, voice, interactive data, and non-interactive data over both wired and wireless connections.

Internet user today have come to expect uninterupted video, voice, data and wireless tra.c and performance in both service provider and enterprise networks.

However, tra.c congestion can cause crippling e.ect that e.ect the performance and quality of service (QoS) of network.

Anagran FR-1000 Intelligent Flow Router is the solution to address this issue, said O.sgate Sdn Bhd’s chief technical o.cer Ahmad Shahriman Md Yasin.

Anagran FR-1000 Flow Router is a technology innovation developed by Dr Lawrence Roberts, co-founder of the Internet and chief executive of Redwood, California-based Anagran Inc.

O.sgate, is locally developed company focusing on testing, auditing and benchmarking services on QoS and performance of broadband network, has recently been granted with exclusive distributorship of the product for the Southeast Asian region.

Shariman said the Anagran FR-1000 is targeted at various Internet service providers (ISPs) and enterprise networks that have the need to solve network congestion problems and improve their broadband QoS.

“Today’s large .xed rate .ows like video and voice are not supported well with current-day routers which have freeze-frame, jitter and general scalability challenges under even the most moderate levels of network congestion. Existing products will not e.ectively deliver IPTV (Internet protocol TV), video on demand, and VOIP (voice-over Internet protocol) mixed with P2P(peer-to-peer) and future network tra.c.

”Users and providers are becoming more sophisticated and they will not stand stuttering video, truncated or dropped words during VOPI calls, slow Web service, and emergency services that you cannot rely on. The Anagran FR-1000 will change all that. The technology will support the demands of this generation and the next,” he said in Kuala Lumper recently.

Anagran’s optimised .ow-based approach to internet protocol (IP) routing represents a signi.cant quality improvement and cost reduction in IP since its inception almost 40 years ago, said Shariman.

“A .ow is a single meaningful end-to-end activity over the network, and is de.ned by IPv4 header .ve-tuple of source and destination port, source and destination address, and protocol. Examples of .ows would be a video download, a vice call, or an image transfer.

”The Anagran FR-1000 bases all of its tra.c classic.cation, packet forwarding and tra.c control on .ows.

This is a stark departure from traditional routers that base all tra.c management and forwarding functions on idividual packets only, since they have no ongoing knowledge of the .ows passing through them,” he explained.

As a standard layer 3 IP router, the Anagran FR-1000 seamlessly interoperates with any other existing traditional IP routers in the network, but has a number of signi.cant technological advantages over today’s packet routers.

With its Fast Flow Routing (FFR) architecture, the Anagran FR-1000 maintains .ow state information about all packets in each individual .ow, and manages tra.c, congestion, and packet forwarding based on the real-time state of every .ow.

Among other things, the Anagran FR-1000 keeps real-time track of duration, rate, and byte count per .ow, enabling .ne tuned control of the rate and treatment of every .ow.

“By maintaining constant state information, the Anagran FR-1000 uses its unique FFR architecture to enable new levels of tra.c management, router performance, and e.ciency in an extremely compact, energy-friendly 1 RU form factor. By managing tra.c and forwarding packets based on .ows rather than individual packets as they arrive, the Anagran FR-1000 gains insight into tra.c dynamics and behaviour over time that is unachievable by traditional packet routers. Since roughly 95 per cent of all packets switched through the internal switching fabric completely bypass the routing function, very little processing power is expensed in forwarding individual packets,” Shariman said.

The result is massive e.ciency gains that are evidenced by the Anagran FR-100’s extremely compact 1 RU form factor, which houses up to 48 wire-speed GigE ports, and the scant 300 watts of electricity required to power the system when fully con.gured.

The organisation is currently building a complet independent IP Test Lab to support and enhance their OVP services. It is also o.ering network forensic and broadband solutions.

With Anagran Fr-1000, we believe will be able to clinch some RM6 million in deals next y ear. Our revenue at present is around RM13 million, “ said Shariman.
